During America’s Golden Age of Illustration, New Rochelle was home to many of leading artists who created the covers of the nation’s magazine’s and advertisements. As a premier suburban community, with easy access to Manhattan, the “Queen City of the Sound” was an ideal place for artists to live and work. Joseph Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell, Coles Phillips, Orson Lowell, and Nell Brinkley, were among the dozens of top-flight illustrators who not only lived in the community, but supported many civic projects through the New Rochelle Art Association. In this richly illustrated slide presentation, City Historian Barbara Davis will reveal the artists, their homes, their work and the national trends they influenced.
