Each January Children’s Librarians eagerly await to hear which author and book will be awarded the Newbery Medal. the medal, first awarded in 1922 for excellence in children’s literature, went to author Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882 – 1944) for his book, The Story of Mankind, “The author examines civilization’s progress from ancient times, revealing man’s efforts to enhance his knowledge, wealth, and power.”

The Story of Mankind has been updated and is available to place on hold in the Westchester Library system. Check it out today! I wonder how many children in our community read this book in 1922. This January 2023, as we celebrate the Centennial of the Mamaroneck Public Library, we hope your favorite children’s title wins this exemplary award. Stay tuned…..
